When is your ball on the green?
Ball on Putting Green
One of the frequently asked questions of the referees at this year’s Open Championship related to whether a ball was on or off the putting green.
A ball is deemed to lie on the putting green when any part of it touches the putting green. It is important to establish if the ball is on or off the putting green as a player is only permitted to mark and lift the ball when it lies on the putting green (Rule 20-1).
Due to the immaculately prepared putting greens and surrounds at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, on more than one occasion a player would ask the question if their ball was on or off the putting green to ensure they were entitled to mark and lift the ball.
As every match at The Open Championship has a referee walking with it, the referee was on hand to clarify this with the player.
